Tawny Frogmouth Entangled

Our wildlife rescue van was called to Merrylands in the west of Sydney, where a bird was reported to be high in a tree entangled with rope.

With the bird at least 8 metres up in the tree the NSW Fire Brigade were called to help. They managed to reach it by cutting the kite string from one side and it was able to be lowered down enough to capture and secure safely in a container.

It turned out to be a Tawny Frogmouth that had been caught at the tip of the wing by the string. The adult Tawny was taken for a check up at Sydney Animal Hospital, Bella Vista where they found no breaks and luckily no major injuries.

It is now in care and is expected to make a full recovery and will be released back in the same location.

It is important to dispose of rubbish properly to prevent entanglement of wildlife. WIRES frequently rescues animals that have been entangled in fishing line and other discarded ropes and strings and while in this case the outcome was good there are often animals that cannot be saved.
