Young flying-foxes struggling due to a lack of food

We are currently receiving an increased volume of calls about young flying-foxes needing help. The main locations of concern are in the east, inner west and Penrith areas of Sydney where there seems to be the most reports of animals in distress.

Young flying-foxes are struggling as there is a food shortage after the wet weather and that leaves them weakened and unable to copy well in cold weather.

If you see a flying-fox; out during the day, alone and away from its camp, obviously in distress, on the ground, in a tree but low to the ground or anywhere you think looks odd or out of place please don't wait, call WIRES immediately.

If you do see a sick, injured or orphaned flying-fox or bat please keep your distance, do not touch it or try to contain it.

Flying-foxes & microbats can carry a virus that is very dangerous to humans. Whilst very few are believed to carry the virus no risks should be taken. Call WIRES 1300 094 737
