WIRES rescues injured Pelican on Eden beach
Pelican release ( PHOTO Credit: J Green, WIRES)
A pelican recently found entangled in fishing line has been rescued
and released back into the ocean after intervention from WIRES volunteer
Janine Green.
The bird was spotted by a member of the public with fishing line wrapped around its left wing and two hooks hanging from its beak.
Ms Green managed to slowly coax the pelican onto the shore and catch it
with a minimum of fuss. It was then taken to the local vet to have the
line and hooks removed and it was treated with antibiotics to assist
with its recovery.
The local WIRES branch is in urgent need of more wildlife carers and is encouraging interested community members to attend the accredited Rescue and Immediate Care Course to be held in Bega on 21 May 2016. For more information on the course please email Training@wires.org.au.
WIRES is celebrating its 30 year anniversary this year with the organisation growing from one branch in 1986 to 27 branches across NSW and 2500 dedicated volunteers today. To mark this milestone, throughout 2016 WIRES will be presenting Special Recognition Awards to individuals and companies that have demonstrated a commitment to support and protect NSW’s native animals.
To organise an interview with WIRES Volunteer Janine Green please call Carla Toyne on 02 89773327 / 0416 272 153 or email Carla@wires.org.au
